About The Speaker:
Caroline Casey has dedicated her life to
changing the way people look at people
with disabilities. In 2000, she rode 1,000
kilometers across India on an elephant to
raise funds for Sight Savers. Caroline has
brought a unique blend of leadership and
vision to the business and political world
in relation to promoting the abilities of those
with disabilities on a national and international level.
In Of Mice and Men the main characters George and Lennie
are best friends. They go from job to job because Lennie
doesn't know how to distinguish right from wrong. Since Lennie
has a disability George is always telling Lennie to act a certain way
and to do this and do that. George cares for Lennie that's why he puts
limitations on what Lennie can and can't do. Casey and Lennie are alike
in the way that they both have been put limitations. They both have
to go this or have to do that. For Lennie having these limitations held him
back from achieving his dream of tending to the rabbits in the farm
he and George were going to have. Casey is saying that having disabilities doesn't
make you less than someone else or incapable of reaching your goal.
You can work hard and get through the limitations set by other people.
I believe Lennie probably could've tended the rabbits. Casey and Lennie were
both strong people that didn't let their limitations stop who they wanted to be.
Casey talks about how when she was born
she was diagnosed with a disease that made
her legally blind. She talks about her struggles.
Casey was always a determined person and
how she never let herself be considered disabled.
She pushed herself to be the best person she could
ever be. She didn't let her disability get in the way
of her dreams and her aspirations.
